Red hourglasses

California has many natural things to love -- the mountains, the beaches, the weather, the plentiful parks of trees both ancient and unusual -- but one of the not-so-nice elements is the presence of the black widow spider.
We killed our first black widow last night. It had taken up residence just above our front door, and we noticed it making its way down the wall as we were heading out to Cold Stone. We bestowed upon it a brief but intense shower of Raid, and this morning we found it crumpled on the ground. I put it in an empty water bottle that was handy and then showed Lara the bright red hourglass on the underside.
The problem with having a poisonous spider in a water bottle, though, is that when I'm feeling thirsty, I see the water bottle there and want to take a drink. Bad idea.
